Case Study: Master Bedroom Remodel and Pool Landscape Project
What better way to gain insights into what it takes to do a remodeling project than to watch one in progress? That's what we are going to do here at HomeTips. Our head homeboy, Don Vandervort, and his wife Bobbi, decided to add a new master suite to their home and to revive their dated pool area. Don will track both projects with this ongoing Remodel Guide: feature during the coming months. Enjoy!
Remodeling the Swimming Pool
During the 1950s and '60s, kidney-shaped swimming pools were plopped into uncounted backyards from Florida to California. Now that these pools are 30 to 50 years old, they have become dated--in both style and function. That's the case with our pool; it was built by former owners in the early '70s and, at this point, it isn't just out of date--it's downright dangerous because, along one side, it's bounded by a rotten, splintery old wooden deck.
In addition to solving the deck problem, we wanted to change the pool's unmistakeably-dated kidney-bean shape. We called a few local pool contractors, asked them to drop by, and soon learned that, to do this, we might have to virtually demolish the old pool and start over. But then another possibility surfaced.
Paging through an issue of Sunset magazine, we saw an incredibly natural, park-like swimming pool that landscape designer Nick Williams had created from a basic kidney . We were thrilled to find that his offices were only about 30 minutes away from us, so we called him and asked him to stop by our home with his portfolio.
