Home Built-up Roofing: Easy Fixes

To patch blisters or holes in a built-up or asphalt roll roof you’ll need:
* A broom
* A utility knife
* Roofing cement
* A putty knife
* A piece of asphalt shingle or roll roofing for a patch

First, sweep the gravel aside with a broom (although you may find that the blister or hole is at a bare patch on the roof). If there’s a blister, cut into the asphalt and roofing felt with a utility knife until you’ve relieved the pressure under the blister. Take the putty knife and spread roofing cement inside the blister or hole as shown here Work the cement so that it spreads some distance below the edge of the cut or hole.

As shown here, cut a patch from an asphalt shingle or a piece of roll roofing that’s about 2 inches larger than the hole and slide it into the slit. Press it into the roofing cement, making certain to cover as much of the area inside the cut as possible. Cover the blister or hole with roofing cement to seal the patch, working the cement about 2 inches beyond the edges. Replace the gravel as the roofing cement begins to dry.
