You can often repair damage to wood siding so that it is hardly noticeable. Tasks you can easily take on yourself include fixing split boards, filling holes, and repainting. To repair a split board youll need: a chisel, waterproof glue, a hammer or screwdriver, and nails or screws.

Pry both sides of the crack apart slightly and coat the edges of the board with glue as shown at top left. Nail or screw the board into position or, if the repair is in a very visible location, drive nails just below the board to hold it in place as the glue dries, and remove the nails when it has set.
Shingles and shakes are small enough to replace rather than repair, assuming you can find good matches. Replace a shingle just as you would replace one on the Roof.

To replace a milled board, youll need to find a new piece that is exactly the same pattern as the original. Finding boards to match older patterns may be challenging. If you cant find one, you may be able to steal a piece from a less conspicuous part of your house (this will need to be replaced); otherwise, you may need to have pieces custom milled.
Cut out the damaged area with a circular saw after you have pulled out all of the exposed nails. If youve damaged the roofing paper, repair it with roofing cement. Nail in the new piece of board so that it fits in snugly and caulk nail holes. Paint to match.
